zozo의 불행감별지(MSA, Misery Self-Assessment)는 상담센터에 가면 으레 실행하는 MMPI(다면적 인성검사)의 형식을 본떠 제작되었다. MSA에는 불행한 사람들, 즉 타인으로부터의 폭력으로 피해를 입어 광기를 내면화한 사람들만이 공감할 수 있는 666가지의 문장들이 담겨 있다. 이 검사는 어떠한 것도 증명하지 못하고, 어떠한 문제도 해결하지 못한다. 그러나 zozo의 세계관에서 그것은 하나의 증명이 되고, 더 나아가 ‘불행마패’로 작용한다. 이 ‘불행마패’가 없는 사람에게는 많은 불이익이 따르고, “불행이 스펙이 된다”는 주장은 불행한 사람의 절실한 외침이다.
우울증이나 수많은 정신적 질병들, 눈에 보이지 않고 잡히지 않는 무형의 좌절들이 남들에게 유의미해지기 위해서 여러 전문가들이 붙어 만들어낸 수백여 가지의 문항들이 절대로 그 좌절들에 다가가지 못함을 꼬집는다. 또한, 정신질환자에게게 내면화된 다양한 ‘증상’들과 생각을 새로운 지표로 만들면서, 정신질환과 신경다양성에 대한 과학적/사회적/윤리적 인식을 뒤튼다.
사실 우울증이나 조현병의 현대적 진찰 방식과 정의가 자리잡은 것은 얼마 되지 않는다. 심지어 질병에 대한 진단과 평가는 지금까지도 변하고 있고, 여전히 편견에 둘러싸여 있기 때문에 MSA는 유의미한 광인 출사표가 된다.

zozo’s Misery Self-Assessment (MSA) is modeled after the MMPI (Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory), a psychological test commonly used in counseling centers. The MSA consists of 666 statements that only those who have internalized madness through the experience of violence can truly resonate with. The assessment resolves nothing and proves nothing through its myriad response procedures. Yet, within zozo’s worldview, it becomes a form of validation—a Misery Badge that dictates social standing. Those without the badge face numerous disadvantages, and the assertion that misery becomes a qualification is a desperate cry from those in despair.
The MSA critiques how meticulously crafted diagnostic tools—designed to render intangible and unseen forms of despair, such as depression and countless other mental illnesses, meaningful to others—ultimately fail to capture their reality. At the same time, it redefines and subverts scientific, social, and ethical perceptions of mental illness and neurodiversity by transforming the internalized symptoms and thoughts of mentally ill individuals into new indicators.
In truth, modern diagnostic methods and definitions of conditions such as depression and schizophrenia are relatively recent and continuously evolving. Diagnoses and evaluations remain shrouded in prejudice, making the MSA a manifesto for the misunderstood and marginalized.
