《반짝이는 것들은 빛이 없어도 반짝일 수 있을까?》 연작은 죽음의 세계로 들어가야만 했던 이들을 추모하며 까맣게 타들어간 마음을 대변하듯, 흑연으로 그려진 죽은 새의 드로잉 연작이다. 죽은 새는 장수나 행운과는 전혀 연관이 없어 불길한 이미지로 낙인찍힌 무법자들이다. 마치 처녀로 비명횡사한 이모의 묫자리가 불길함이 되어 서있을 곳이 없었던 것과 같다. 매년 한국에서 약 800만 마리의 새들이 투명한 소음방지벽이나 고층 유리 건물에 부딪혀 추락사한다. 이들의 존재는 어쩌면 인력으로 막을 수 있었을지도 모르는 많은 서글픈 죽음들을 유비한다.

Can Things Still Shine Without Light? is a series of graphite drawings depicting dead birds, created in memory of those who were forced to pass through the land of death. Rendered in deep black tones, these drawings embody hearts consumed by grief. The dead birds, far from symbols of longevity or fortune, are marked as ominous outcasts—much like the burial site of my aunt, who met an untimely death and was laid to rest in a place deemed inauspicious, without a rightful place. Each year in South Korea, approximately 8 million birds die after colliding with transparent noise barriers or high-rise glass buildings. Their existence mirrors many sorrowful deaths—losses that, perhaps, could have been prevented by human intervention. These drawings mourn their silent, unacknowledged tragedies while drawing attention to the fragility of lives lost in such avoidable circumstances.
