《어쩔 수 없음들과의 여정》은 소나타 형식을 본딴 3개의 장으로 구성되어 있다. ‘정(正), Allegro di Molto(매우 빠르게 , 활발하게)’라는 제목과 함께 시작되는 영상은 삶에서 필연적으로 마주하게 되는 죽음을 다룬다. 이모의 죽음, 친구의 자살이라는 사건을 둘러싼 독백과 대화가 이어진다. “시궁창의 99가지 질문”이라는 이름의 의문들이 끊임없이 튀어나온다. 납득할 새도 없이 비정하고 빠르게 진행되는 죽음과, 그것의 서늘한 존재를 어려서부터 감지해 버린 모녀의 이야기가 주가 된다.
두 번째 장인 ‘반(反), Adagio(느리게)’에서는 죽음, 즉 상실 이후에도 이어지는 “삶”에 초점을 맞춘다. 비슷한 나이에 다른 이유로 죽음을 맞아야 했던 두 인물을 상실한 후 모녀가 각자의 삶에서 느꼈던 비통함과 광기, 잔인할 정도로 느리게 이어지고야 마는 생명을 그린다.
마지막 장인 ‘합(合), Moderato(보통 속도로)’에서는 여전히 모녀의 뼈에 새겨진 상실과 ‘가정폭력’이라는 공통의 상처를 두고 연대하는 서로의 모습을 비춘다. 죽음-삶 그리고 그 중간의 어딘가를 끊임없이 탐색하는 과정 끝에 “99가지가 시궁창에 빠져 있어도 ‘단 하나’가 있다면, 고통스럽고 위태할지라도 삶을 이어갈 수 있다”는 믿음을 갖게 된다. 믿음이 아니라면, 이것은 산 자로서의 의무다.

Journey with the Inevitables is structured in three movements, inspired by the sonata form. It begins with a video titled 正 (Allegro di Molto – Very Fast, Energetic), addressing the inevitability of death encountered in life. The narrative unfolds through monologues and dialogues surrounding events such as the death of the artist’s aunt and a friend’s suicide, interwoven with relentless bursts of questions under the title 99 Questions from the Gutter. With no time to process or comprehend, the story plunges mercilessly into the cold presence of death, centering on a mother and daughter who, from an early age, have perceived its chilling inevitability.
The second movement, 反 (Adagio – Slow), shifts focus to the persistence of life in the aftermath of death and loss. It portrays the anguish and madness experienced by the mother and daughter as they grapple with the slow, relentless continuity of existence following the loss of two individuals of similar age but differing fates. The passage highlights the cruelty of time, which forces them forward despite their grief.
The final movement, 合 (Moderato – At a Moderate Tempo), reflects the evolving bond between the mother and daughter as they find solidarity in their shared scars—both the lingering grief of loss and the wounds of domestic violence. As they navigate the space between life and death, they come to believe: “Even if 99 things sink into the gutter, if just one remains, no matter how painful or precarious, life can still go on.” If not a belief, then it becomes their duty as the living to carry on.
