《텅 빈 기도》는 한국에 존재하는 다양한 기원의 장소들을 촬영하여 광목천 위에 오일바로 그린 평면 작업이다.
병풍은 흔히 액으로 불리는 사망, 사건사고, 상처, 질병과 광기, 재난으로부터 우리를 보호한다고 여겨진다. 그러면 병풍의 뒷편에 남아 있는 배제된 존재들은 무엇일까? 거기에 존재하는 실패하고 아프고 고통스러운 원혼들이야말로 가장 퀴어한 찌꺼기들이다. 나는 한국의 유명한 관광지에서 으레 발견할 수 있는 행운 기원의 장소들을 촬영한다. 그리고 그것들로부터 지극히 사적인 기도 내용을 제거하고 그린다. 간절한 기원의 껍질만 남은 이 장면들, 기원의 기표만이 존재하는 이 공간에서 온갖 불운들은 배제되지 않는다. 행복과 불운의 이분법이 무너진 모든 가능성의 세상에서, 새로운 정의와 선의 도래를 기다린다.

In Korean tradition, folding screens (병풍, byeongpung) are believed to shield us from aeg (厄)—death, accidents, injuries, illness, madness, and disaster. But what about those left behind the screen? The failed, the suffering, the restless spirits—these remnants are the most queer of all.
I photograph sites where wishes for good fortune are commonly made at famous tourist destinations in Korea. Then, I strip these wishes of their personal content, leaving only the hollow shells of earnest desires. In these scenes, where only the symbols of longing remain and no misfortune is excluded, a world of infinite possibilities unfolds—a space beyond the dichotomy of happiness and misfortune, waiting for new definitions of justice and good to take shape.
