개인전 《어쩔 수 없음들과의 여정》은 원치 않는 방식으로 비극적인 생을 마감하게 된 모든 존재들에 대한 애도이다. 누구도 자세히 알려주지 않는, 사랑하는 사람의 죽음 이후의 삶에 대하여 다룬다. 삶을 어떻게 지탱해 나갈 수 있는지, 삶 안에서 어떤 방식으로 떠나간 이를 애도할 수 있을지 탐구한다.
동명의 영상 “어쩔 수 없음들과의 여정”은 약 50여분간 진행된다. 30여년 전 살해당한 이모를 떠나보내고 난 후 엄마의 삶에서 일어난 사건들과, 그로부터 30여년 후 스스로 죽음을 택한 친구를 떠나보낸 작가 자신의 삶이 얽히며 이어진다. 죽음 이후의 삶이 얼마나 비슷한 양상인지, 이러한 “어쩔 수 없음”들이 도처에 얼마나 산재한지를 이야기한다.
전시장에는 약 30여 마리의 새 폐사체 드로잉이 함께 전시된다. 겨우 펼친 손 정도의 크기인 종이판넬에, 조류충돌로 애꿎은 목숨을 잃은 작은 새들이 그려진다. 이 새들은 인력으로 방지할 수 있었던 수많은 안타까운 죽음들을 유비한다. 투명한 유리벽은 새들의 입장에서는 보이지 않는 죽음의 벽이지만, 인간의 입장에서는 불가피한 것들이 아니다. 영상에도 그와 같은 인간의 죽음들, 인력으로 피할 수 있었을지 모르는 안타까운 목숨들이 수없이 언급된다. 이태원 10.29 사건, 세월호 사건, SPC노동자의 죽음, 신당역과 강남역에서 벌어진 사건 등이 호명된다. “어쩔 수 없음”이란 결국 어디까지나 죽음 그 자체가 아니라, 죽음 이후에도 비정하게 계속되는 삶이기에.
죽음을 포함한 삶을 살아가면서, 생명의 공통적이고도 필연적인 스러져감을 총체적으로 이해하게 된 작가 모녀는 이제 서로 기대며 연대하려 한다. “99가지가 시궁창에 빠져 있어도 ‘단 하나’만 있으면 살아갈 수 있다”는 말로 영상은 마무리된다. “단 하나”는 사람마다 모두 다르겠지만, 작가에게는 연대와 사랑이며 선의의 다정함이다.
The solo exhibition Journey with the Inevitables is an act of mourning for all beings who met tragic ends beyond their control. It reflects on the often unspoken realities of life after the loss of a loved one, exploring how we can sustain ourselves and find ways to grieve within the bounds of life.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is a 50-minute video of the same title. It weaves together events from the artist’s mother’s life after losing her sister to murder over 30 years ago and the artist’s own life after a close friend took her life. Through these stories, the work reveals the shared patterns of life after death and uncovers how such inevitabilities quietly permeate our world.
Accompanying the video are drawings of approximately 30 bird carcasses, rendered on small paper panels roughly the size of an outstretched hand. The birds, victims of fatal collisions with glass windows, symbolize the countless preventable deaths caused by human negligence. For birds, the transparent glass walls are unseen barriers of death; for humans, they are far from inevitable. Similarly, the video recounts human tragedies that might have been avoidable: the Itaewon 10.29 disaster, the Sewol Ferry tragedy, the death of an SPC worker, and the murders at Sindang Station and Gangnam Station. These “inevitabilities” refer not to death itself, but to the relentless and indifferent continuation of life in its aftermath.
As they confront life, which inherently includes the presence of death, the artist and her mother have come to understand the universal and inevitable fading of all living things. Through this understanding, they have chosen to lean on one another and embrace solidarity. The video concludes with a poignant reflection: “Even if 99 things are sinking into the gutter, having just ‘one thing’ is enough to keep living.” That “one thing” may differ for everyone, but for the artist, it is solidarity, love, and the gentle kindness of goodwill.
